This phone will be the company’s first smartphone with FFOLED display (folding and flexible OLED display). The only clue about the design is the patents registered with the United States Patent and Trademark Office, which was filed by Samsung at the end of September 2016. It shows a device that can be folded up into a traditional smartphone shape.
Samsung Galaxy X display will allow the phone to be a full-size smartphone, which can then be folded up into a more compact form factor. It will also have a single continuous touchscreen across the two segments of the phone.
The next galaxy series will have a Super AMOLED display. The display will fold in the middle via a unique hinge mechanism. Folding the phone won’t destroy display’s structural integrity, image quality, or touch capability.
Early rumors suggest that it will have a dual rear-facing camera module which will bring a big improvement in photo quality. According to the patent image, we can see that there is a camera lens on the top of the closed clamshell. A selfie camera and speaker are on the inside top of the phone.
According to a report from Korean media, Samsung is planning to launch five flagship phones for 2017 including Samsung Galaxy X. It will have folding and flexible OLED display or FFOLED. Rumors suggest that the phone will have a touchscreen that genuinely folds along the middle without creasing, cracking, distorting the image.
This smartphone is also said to bring a clamshell, flip-phone like design. This feature will allow the phone to fold up into a compact, pocket-friendly package without compromising the full-size display. We have seen LG G Flex series with flexible OLED before but Samsung Galaxy X is said to be have much better display than the current flexible OLED in the market.
The smartphone with folded display will allow the user to touch an icon on the edge area of the phone. This will allow the app to be opened once the device is unfolded. From the leaked image of Samsung’s patent, which was filed in November, we can see that the phone allows multiple user profiles to be displayed on the edge of the phone. This will allow some users to enter their password to access their information.
Other rumored specs of the phone are an AMOLED screen with a resolution of 4K (2160 x 3840), 3GB of RAM, a MicroSD slot for expanded storage, and a non-removable battery. As for the processors, Samsung is rumored testing two variants of its future flagship with difference processor, Qualcomm Snapdragon 620, and Snapdragon 820 or 830. So, one of them could possibly the Galaxy X.
It will be the company’s first foldable phone. There are no leaks related to the Galaxy X release date. Rumors suggest that the Galaxy X will be released at MWC/Mobile World Congress next February 2017. The official release date will be updated soon.
